9 function $1 survival tool can be made into a compass.
here is a review of the item on amazon
I recently purchased a wallet survival tool on Amazon for a dollar. Some people also call them credit card tools. The tools have since gone up in price to $1.69. You can see the link to the tools on Amazon above where you can also read the reviews from other buyers.
After trying to figure out all the functions of the little gadget, one of them, which was labeled on my instructions as a compass, stumped me. I could not see how it was any sort of compass, it was merely a hole with markings on the edges. The markings did correspond to the points of a compass, but were not much help.
I decided to see if I could make a mini compass in the hole of the tool. I added clear tape to the bottom of the hole and added a few drops of water. My plan was to put a miniscule piece or magnetized metal on a pivot in the water and cover it with some clear plastic to make a compass. After shaving a thin piece of refrigerator magnet, I placed it into some water and as expected, the sliver of magnet aligned with the north south axis of my compass. I then added the sliver of magnet to the water I had in the hole of my tool. Unfortunately, the magnet stuck to the tool. I assumed the tool was made of poor quality stainless steel and had iron in it causing the magnet to stick. However, I soon learned the tool was actually lightly magnetized. Upon learning this,I strung the tool from a light fixture with some thread and the tool aligned itself with the north south axis of my compass. My dollar tool was now a compass too.
I don’t know if all the wallet survival tools are magnetized, but if yours is like mine, you only have to hang it out of the wind on light thread to find magnetic north.
I will be experimenting with the tool some more. I am planning to add a circle cut from my plastic magnifying glass to the hole in the tool to make it have a magnifying glass feature and hopefully be able to start fires.
I will also be sharpening the knife tool and making non metric markings on the other side to increase its use as a measuring tool.
I think this is a good tool for the price, considering it will fit in a wallet.
