How to Tie the Thief Knot
A step by step guide to tying the Thief Knot ( AKA: Bag Knot or Bread Bag Knot).
The Thief Knot is an ancient security Knot that resembles the Square Knot (Reef Knot) except that the terminal ends are on alternate sides. Historically, sailors would secure their belongings in a bag or tote using the thief knot. If someone were to go through the bag, they would most likely mistakenly retie the bag with a Square Knot which would reveal the tampering.
The Thief Knot is not at all secure, and should not be used for securing ANYTHING! The Thief Knot unties itself if the lines are pulled.
